The Yellow Wallpaper Analytical Essay

Based on the precis format we did together in class, you will write an analytical essay over our short story.  The precis format is your first paragraph.  You will write a minimum of three more.  I expect good paragraphs, not 5-7 sentences, but much more.  This is about quality, not quantity.  You cannot analyze a short story in 5-7 sentences.

What is an analysis:  This is where we analyze an article we have read.  It is NOT a summary, and it is NOT just writing lines from the story.  I should be reading your commentary on what the author was trying to get across to the reader.  The quotes from the essay should be used to back up what you are saying, not be the focus of what you are saying.  So...you are telling me what the author is trying to get across, and showing me with textual evidence HOW she is getting her point across.

Essay:
Type:
You will type this on your own.  Tomorrow we will take the entire class period to write the rough draft, so all you should have left is to go home and type it.
Don't forget that you can check computers out from the library with parental consent on the form I gave you.

Format:
Times New Roman
12 point font
Double spaced
Full heading (in the header to conserve space)

Title:
The title is based on what you write.  Title it something that goes with your thought process.  The word essay better NOT show up anywhere in your title.

This is due Tuesday, October 3rd when you walk into class.  This must be typed and printed.

"The Yellow Wallpaper"

Today (9/22) we listened to "The Yellow Wallpaper."  You will be writing an analytical essay next week over this story, so please take the time to listen to the story.  I will also be grading your annotation of the story.

You can listen (and follow along) to the story at this link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hvo1MobT8vM

A few notes to add to the front of your story:

The story is a psychological horror, which means it is something she has going on in her head.  She's going crazy (hint, hint).

The story is written in the format of stream of consciousness, or writing as she thinks.  This is an interior dialogue.

The author lived from 1860-1935, and had post partum depression (which is what this story is about), but she did not go crazy, she left her husband and baby (which was not done in that era).

The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me

Today we read the above essay.  You must write a two paragraph "essay" after reading.

Paragraph 1: Write a summary of the story.  This should be a minimum of 5-7 sentences.
Paragraph 2: Answer the question: If I were illiterate, how would my life be different.

Do not skip lines between paragraphs, that's what indenting is for.  Make sure you have your full heading, and a title "The Joy of Reading and Writing Summary."
